Welcome to a new week and a new home tour. It’s been quite a while since I shared a home tour. Two years ago I shared our plans for my dream kitchen here. Then in September I shared how we remodeled and decorated our kitchen which you can see here and here. Now I’m excited to share with you our master bedroom, which next to our kitchen is my favorite room in our home.
Our Master Bedroom ~ the Before
The master bedroom is on the back of the house off the living room. It’s a really nice size, about 13 X 17-feet, with a pretty bay window that looks out to the pool and a single French door that leads to the patio. The ceilings are 12 feet high which gives the room a wonderful airy feel. So much natural light comes in the morning sometimes that the pool reflects onto the ceiling, creating a pretty light show.
Here’s what the room looked like the day after we closed. Looking into the bedroom, you can see the great bay window overlooking the pool and backyard. The plantation shutters were in excellent shape. The crown molding and base moldings were already there. The room was painted a drab olive green. Do I need to say that the room will be painted? The room was carpeted (The previous owner had several cats and the carpet throughout the house smelled really bad. We had the owner remove all the carpet and padding from the entire house on the day we closed. A week later the smell was gone!)
The bedroom had 2 major built-ins: one was a TV cabinet with drawer space below. Normally, I love built-ins, but we had a TV armoire that we loved, so we had our contractor pull out the cabinet. We repurposed the TV cabinet to the garage where it now stores my paint supplies and other garage stuff.
This view looks into the master bathroom on the right and the alcove on the left which leads into the living room. We felt that the bookcase overpowered the room. Once the built-in bookcase was removed, there was the perfect place for my beautiful secretary that I had been dying to put in our bedroom (It had spend the past 12 years upstairs in Jennifer’s bedroom at our other house and before that in the living room.)
It was amazing how much bigger the room looked with the built-ins taken out. Here the hardwood floors have been installed and the room has been painted. We used Sea Salt by Benjamin Moore, a beautiful soft blue-grey that I just love. At this point, the old can lights had been replaced with recessed LED’s and the sound system had been installed.
Tomorrow I’ll share the fun stuff ~ how we decorated the bedroom.
